This unique story of a journey that started two decades ago, due to a mother who was frantically searching for a special school for her 12-year-old special needs girl child. She approached Ms. Teresa Vallukulam, the principal of a special school that was located over 26 kilometres away with no public transport facility to reach them there.

The panic-stricken faces of the mother campaigned with the ‘Rights of Special Education’ and drove her to approach then-auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam, Mar Thomas Chakkiath, and Rev. Father Jacob Ernat, the chaplain of Lisy Hospital Ernakulam, to start a special education centre in South Chittoor area.

This area was accessible to any special child in the surrounding five islands namely in Chenoor, Varapuzha, Pezhala, Kothad, Kadamakudy. Their motivation, and support made Teresa move forward, and with the help of like-minded people from different walks of life, joined together to work as a team. This included Ms. Gladis Cyril, prof. of St Teresa College, Mrs.Shantha Mathew, Ms.Sheeja Varghese, and some parents of special needs children, Mr. P I. Dennis. C.P George, Mr.VP.Varghese and Mrs Laly Dennis. They also agreed to the wish of Ms Teresa to name the society after her late sister; and thus on the 4 th March 1998, Reena Memorial Samrakshana Society was registered under the Travancore Cochin Literary and Scientific Charitable Societies Act [351/98] for the care of children with special needs.

On 27 th April 1998, the society started the school in a rented building and that was the first stepping stone…… Later, with the support of philanthropic people and well-wishers, the society purchased 60 cents of land. In 2002 Shri. C.V Jacob, managing director of Synthite group laid the foundation stone for a full-fledged special education and training centre.

Under the initiative of the Rotary Club of Cochin, the Inner Wheel Club of Cochin through Roll Royce, funds were raced to complete this special education center, which was inaugurated on 13 th August 2003 by the managing director of Rolls Royce, UK. In 2006 m/s VM matrix from France funded the vocational training and employment centre, RMS Workland, and Mr. EP George and CP George sponsored the laundry unit.
And thus this story goes on…….
Remembering each and every one who boarded and travelled with us on this journey and those who stepped down and left us permanently. Thanks to the invisible hands which worked wonders through many visible hands to make this happy and successful story.
